Retired NBA legend Michael Jordan, an honorary assistant to the US Presidents Cup team for this week's match against the Internationals, was criticised for smoking on golf field.

A photograph of the 46-year-old former basketball star puffing a cigar during a practice round at Harding Park golf course has been published by the San Francisco Chronicle as the city ban smoking on public courses.

Recreation and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg told the newspaper that he had asked US PGA Tour officials to remind Jordan of the no-smoking rule.

"I've already sent off an e-mail to the PGA Tour director," Ginsburg said. "It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal and that we would appreciate their support."

Those flouting the ban at Harding Park could be subject to a 100-dollar fine.

"But don't expect me to ask him for it," the Chronicle quoted Matt Dorsey, a spokesman for the San Francisco city attorney.

Golf is the favorite sport, beside basketball, to Jordan, who led Chicago Bulls to six National Basketball Association titles in a Hall of Fame career.
