Former NBA player Sui Feifei notched 27 points to lead defending champion PLA (People's Liberation Army) into the final of the women's basketball tournament, beating Jiangsu 95-76 in the semifinal here on Saturday.
It was a rematch of the women's basketball final four years ago in the 10th Chinese National Games, when Jiangsu, as the host team then, surrendered a 69-113 defeat and witnessed the PLA side to lift their sixth national trophy in a row.
Jiangsu surprised the opponent with a 7-0 run at the beginning of the match, and forced coach of PLA to call for a timeout. When the game resumed, PLA strengthened their defense and returned a 7-0spurt to level the score. The two teams exchanged lead for some times before the first quarter ended with PLA leading 23-20.
The 30-year-old forward Sui Feifei, who used to play in Sacramento Monarchs, buried two three-pointers to help PLA build up the lead. The 1.84m national team star fired in 18 points in the second quarter along, to extend the advantage to 17.
Sui collected a match-high 27 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists as well as 3 steals to shine in the PLA squad which consists of 10 former and current national players. Center Zhang Xiaoni pocketed 22 while Chen Lisha added 11 to secure PLA's final ticket.
Newly crowned Asian Championship MVP Bian Lan failed to prove her ability with only 12 points earned in 25 minutes. Shooting guard Li Shanshan had a team-high 17 for Jiangsu, who will fight for the third place against Guanggong.
Ma Yuenan, coach of PLA, insisted that he is 100 percent confident to retain the title, but he had to cope with the strong challenge from Liaoning, who outgunned Guangdong 101-80 in the other semifinal.
Wang Fang, coach of Liaoning told the post-match conference, "Every team wants to claim the title in the National Games. The match will be very tough for us as the PLA side is much stronger, but we will fight for our chance."
The Liaoning team, who will fight hard for their first title ever in Sunday's final, took part in every edition of previous tournaments and finished as runner-up for five times.
