Gilberto Madail, president of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), told Portuguese media on Sunday from Switzerland, that he was very happy that Portugal will play the group phase of soccer's European Cup in Switzerland.
"Portugal is always well received when it plays in Switzerland," Madail said, adding that Portuguese people living in Switzerland are "a fantastic and enthusiastic audience".
Portugal will play Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Turkey in Switzerland, which co-hosts the Cup with neighboring Austria.
"Someone has already won in this draw: our emigrants, who are fantastic," said Madail. "In the few days I have been in Switzerland they have been asking me to get Portugal to play in Switzerland," he said.
Madail added that while all the groups are be tough, Group C with Holland, Italy, France and Romania is particularly so.
Asked about the renewal of Brazil's Luiz Felipe Scolari as Portugal's national soccer team manager, Madail said it would be along time before the matter was considered and that it certainly would not be under discussion before the knockout phase of the Cup.
Portugal's first two Cup games will be in Geneva against Turkey on June 7, 2008 and the Czech Republic on June 11. It then moves to Basel, where it will play Switzerland on June 15. Source: Xinhua
