French international Franck Ribery and Italian striker Luca Toni scored for Bayern Munich in the first half to defeat promotion club Hansa Rostock 2-1 and extend their club's unbeaten streak to eight.
Despite a second half that saw his team in danger of losing their lead, coach Ottmar Hitzfeld's team finished with a victory and 39 points, which puts second place Werder Bremen under pressure to win or fall further behind.
Werder face VfL Bochum at the end of the 18th match day on Sunday.
In the second half, Bayern held out Ribery due to thigh complaints, and Hansa took advantage, increasing the pressure and finally scoring.
With some momentum, Rostock pressed Munich and kept the play in their opponents' side of the pitch for much of the rest of the match.
