Bayern Munich beat second-division crosstown rival 1860 Munich 1-0 with a disputed last-minute penalty in extra time of their German Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday.

But the penalty converted by Franck Ribery that allowed Bayern to advance to the semifinals was contentious, with television replays appearing to show Miroslav Klose being brought down outside the penalty area.

"They made life very difficult for us," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said of the opposition, which was reduced to nine men late in the game.

Earlier, midfielder Marcelinho scored in extra time to send VfL Wolfsburg through to the semifinals with a 2-1 win over Hamburger SV.

Bayern striker Luca Toni was sent off in the 84th minute with a second yellow card for retaliating against Markus Thorandt, but Munich's Benjamin Schwarz was also tossed in the 111th, after giving Ribery a slight shove off the ball.

Bayern dominated the game but had only two clear chances in regulation. Tony Kroos shot high in the 36th and Mark van Bommel's volley was stopped by Munich goalkeeper Philipp Tschauner.

In extra time, Philipp Lahm broke through but shot wide.

With the game seemingly headed to a penalty shootout, Klose, who had come on in the second half, was brought down by Chhunly Pagenburg. Although the foul appeared to be outside the box, Bayern got the penalty.

Ribery's first shot found the net but he had to retake the kick because Lucio had charged into the area too early.

With his second attempt, Ribery calmly chipped the ball after faking the goalkeeper.

In the hectic final moments, Thorandt was also sent off and Munich finished the game with nine players.

In Wolfsburg, striker Grafite scored a penalty in the 17th to put the host ahead, after he had been fouled by Hamburg defender Joris Mathijsen.

Rafael van der Vaart equalized in the 70th with a 20-meter volley on an assist from Mohamed Zidan.

Marcelinho, who had a poor game, then scored the winner off a through ball in the 109th to send Wolfsburg to the semifinals for the second straight year.

Borussia Dortmund and second-division Carl Zeiss Jena advanced to the final four on Tuesday.

In France, a strike deep in extra time by substitute Sidi Keita gave Racing Lens a 5-4 victory at Le Mans in a thrilling French League Cup semifinal on Wednesday.

A shootout was looming when Mali midfielder Keita scored the winner from the edge of the box 118 minutes into an action-packed tie played under driving rain.

Lens will meet fellow Ligue 1 struggler Paris St. Germain in the final on March 29, with the winner qualifying for the UEFA Cup.
