Atletico Madrid announced the signing of midfielder Paulo Assuncao from Porto on Sunday afternoon.
The 28-year-old Brazilian becomes Atletico's fifth signing for the new season following the arrival of goalkeeper Gregory Coupet, striker Sinama Pongolle, John Heitinga and Czech defender Tomas Ujfalusi Assuncao, a defensive midfielder player, who made 26 league appearances for Porto last season.
He has taken advantage of FIFA regulations to join Atletico, although the club insist that they are "attempting to reach a friendly agreement with Porto".
Assuncao will meet his new teammates this Monday when they begin pre-season training at 20:00 hrs.
The club have also announced that Portuguese midfielder Maniche will not be returning to Madrid. "Atletico are maintaining negotiations with several clubs who are interested in signing him," informed the club website.
