South African engineering and artisan students will be trained to work on 2010 World Cup projects in a bid to strengthen production and economic growth, the SA Department of Labour said here on Thursday.

SA Labor Minister Membathisi Mdladlana, who was addressing both learners and employers at the department's offices, said the department had paid 11.4 million rand to have engineering students trained and 7.469 million rand to train artisan students.

"The funding is in line with Accelerated and Shared Growth Initiative for South Africa( ASGI-SA) and the Joint Initiative on Priority Skills Acquisition (JIPSA)," said Mdladlana.

He emphasized the relationship between employees and employers as a bond that worked to a 50/50 format to benefit all stakeholders.

"Investment in training is the responsibility of all stakeholders, government, enterprises, social partners and individuals", said Mdladlana.

In the past, trained students were unable to secure 'sustainable' jobs and such projects were funded to rectify this.
