The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) declared on Thursday that the Brazilian soccer forward Dodo will be suspended from the sport for two years.
The 34-year-old player was found guilty of doping. The punishment began on the 6th of December of 2007 and will extend until the end of 2009.
In 2007, with his then club of Botafogo, the player failed a doping test after a game with Vasco on the 14th of June. The player received a 120-day suspension for the episode. He was free to play on the 2nd of August after being freed from his suspension by the Superior Court of Sport Justice in Brazil.
The court's decision caused a certain commotion through Brazil. Due to the attention the case received, FIFA decided to analyze the case more closely. The case was handed to the CAS.
In May of 2008, Dodo traveled to Lausanne and spent nearly two days in court at the CAS. Upon returning to Brazil, the player appeared optimistic about the outcome. His defense was that the test was contaminated by caffeine pills. Dodo alleged that the substance came from a prescribed medicine that was given to him by the Botafogo team doctors.
However, on Thursday, the international court issued its decision. According to the player's agent, Dodo is currently traveling with his family. The athlete is aware of the court's decision and has refused to comment on the matter.
Earlier in the week, the player rejected the option of resigning with the soccer club of Fluminense and remains without any contract.
