Dutch premier league (Eredivisie) leaders Groningen whipped ADO Den Haag 3-0 at home on Sunday to retain their leadership on the Eredivisie table, edging defending champions PSV Eindhoven into second place.

In Groningen, the increasingly confident hosts opened the scoring at the 11th minute through a goal by Petter Andersson. Evgeniy Levchenko added a second goal at the 25th minute to give Groningen a 2-0 lead in the first half. At the 70th minute, MarcusBerg's goal sealed the victory over Den Haag, the third consecutive win for Groningen.

In other actions on Sunday, three teams, which advanced to the UEFA Cup group stage last Wednesday, were all beaten.

In Heerenveen, Ajax were humiliated 2-5 by the hosts, which also sailed into the UEFA Cup group stage. An own goal by Bruno Silva gave Heerenveen a 1-0 lead only four minutes into the match. At the 8th minute, Roy Beerens made it 2-0 for the hosts.

In the second half, Heerenveen extended the lead to 4-0 after 63 minutes. Though Klass Jan Huntelaar and Luis Suarez pulled two back for Ajax, a penalty kick by Danijel Pranjic in injury time made it 5-2 in the hosts' favor.

Feyenoord, which defeated Sweden's Kalmar last Wednesday in the UEFA Cup competition, were whitewashed by Nijmegen 0-2. Feyenoord have had a poor record so far this season, with 1 win, 1 draw and 3 losses.

Meanwhile, Volendam were defeated by visitors NAC Breda 2-4, and Utrecht beat Twente 3-0 comfortably.

On the Eredivisie table, Groningen remain at top, followed by PSV Eindhoven, Breda, Heerenveen and Alkmaar.
