Serbia produced a lively performance to reinvigorate their hopes of reaching the FIFA World Cup finals with a 3-0 win over Lithuania in their Group 7 qualifier on Saturday.
First half goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Milos Krasic sent Serbia on their way while Nikola Zigic added the third in the closing stages, after he missed a penalty.
The result left Serbia level on six points with Lithuania at the top of the group ahead of Wednesday's visit to Austria, who were held to a 1-1 draw by the Faroe Islands.
The Serbians started with an adventurous 4-3-3 formation and the strategy paid instant dividends as Chelsea defender Ivanovic headed the home side into a sixth-minute lead from a corner delivered by Nenad Milijas to the near post.
Midfielder Krasic doubled the lead in the 34th with his first international goal, a swivelling volley that gave keeper Zhidrunas Karchemarskas no chance after the visitors had failed to clear a Milijas cross from the right.
Zigic missed his spot kick after Lithuania defender Arunas Klimavicius was sent off for handling the ball on the goal line but the striker made amends within minutes when he headed in BoskoJankovic's inviting cross from the right. Source: Xinhua
