Peru, at the bottom of their World Cup qualifying group, are still hopeful of gaining a place in the playoffs.
Peru have seven points from nine games in the South American zone and visit leaders Paraguay on Wednesday facing what appears to be an impossible task to reach the finals in South Africa in 2010.
"We know we have only a few chances of fighting for fifth place and most of those chances will be at stake on Wednesday," coach Jose Del Solar told reporters in Asuncion. "But we're confident we can play to a high standard."
"We know it's not going to be easy when we face the best team in the group but matches have to be played and each one is different," added Del Solar.
The top four in the 10-team section qualify for the finals and the fifth team playoff against the fourth-placed side from the CONCACAF region for another place.
Peru have not qualified for the finals since 1982.
