Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster defended his team after watching them crash to a 2-0 home defeat to Juventus late on Wednesday night.

Two goals from Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero condemned Real Madrid to their second defeat to the Italian side in a fortnight. The result means it is almost impossible for Real to finish top of their Champions League group and means a further setback against either Bate Borisov or Zenit Saint Petersburg could see them knocked out of the competition altogether.

Real were able to count on the services of striker Ruud van Nistelrooy for the game, but were never able to break down a well-organized Italian defense and midfield.

"I feel very disappointed by the result, the result does not reflect what happened out on the pitch, because I saw a Real Madrid team that was superior to a Juventus that was 100 percent effective," said Schuster after the game in declarations that were published on the club website.

"The problem is that in our best moments, we didn't score goals. They had two shots and scored twice against us," said the Real Madrid coach.

"We know that Juventus play the way they do when they take the lead. I liked the way my team played, but the shame is that our chances didn't go in."

Schuster continued to defend his side, insisting that they had been the better team on the pitch of the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. He also looked ahead to Madrid's two remaining games, which are away to Bate Borisov in Ukraine and at home to Zenit St Petersburg on Dec. 10.

"Now we have to try and win our next two games and see if we can finish first or second. What we have to do is just look at our own results," he said.
