Celtic striker Scott Brown has suggested that Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo had preferential treatment on Wednesday's UEFA Champions League.

Brown was left disappointed as the Portugal ace got away with a late challenge on him in the 1-1 Champions League draw at Parkhead.

"Maybe it's because it's the Champions League. Maybe it's because it's Manchester United," the Scotland international was quoted on Friday's Daily Record.

"Or maybe it's just because it's Ronaldo we're talking about but I don't think there are many situations in football where a referee would let someone get away with something like that."

Brown was upset that the referee did not give Ronaldo what he deserved and questioned whether the outcome would have been the same had it not been the FifPro World Footballer of the Year committing the offence.

"The ball fell between us and went out of play but as I got back up he just had a boot at me.

"He connected with my calf or my shin, I'm not too sure. I was just so taken aback that he had reacted like that because I knew if it had been me I would have been in serious trouble.

"Maybe the ref didn't see it too well but his linesman was only a few yards away and must have had a clear view," he said.

Brown said that each player should be treated equally on field despite his prestige.

"I just don't think there should be one rule for the rest of us and another one for Cristiano Ronaldo," he said.

"I'm not saying he should have been sent off. Those are decisions for the officials to make - but they surely can't just ignore it.

"At the very least he should have been booked and been given a talking too. That's what I would have expected if it had been me."
