Mexican national team coach Javier Aguirre will keep his post at least until the 2010 World Cup, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) said on Monday.

Aguirre, known as Vasco (The Basque), has a contract that clearly states he will lead the Tri, as the Mexican squad is known, during the whole of the qualification rounds and the World Cup, if Mexico reaches the competition, FMF's director of national teams Nestor de la Torre said.

"These are two part contracts, first for qualifications and then for the World Cup. There is no margin in these contracts not to fulfill these obligations," de la Torre told a press conference at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium.

Aguirre, a replacement for Sven Goran Eriksson, who went to Spain's Atletico Madrid in February after the Tri lost to both the United States and Honduras, is due to be formally presented to the media on Thursday.

Aguirre's first match will be Mexico versus El Salvador, a World Cup qualification match, rather than a friendly which is the customary starter for a new coach. The former Atletico Madrid coach is expected to name his squad on Thursday.

Mexico is currently fourth in the North and Central America and Caribbean qualifying, competing against five other teams for three tickets to the 2010 World Cup, due to be held in South Africa.

It will be Aguirre's second time at the helm of Mexican national team. He guided Mexico to the second round at the 2002 World Cup co-hosted by South Korea and Japan.
