Nigerian Police said on Monday that it had launched investigation into the death of Bayelsa United FC skipper Abel Tabor.

The player was shot dead by suspected armed robbers on the Warri- Sapele road on Sunday night.

The shooting came hours after the Yenagoa side won the Globacom Premier League title.

Charles Muka, Delta Police Command spokesman, said the command had been informed of the incident but had not got the full details. He added that no arrests had been made and that Tabor's corpse had been deposited at the Warri General Hospital mortuary.

Tabor was driving to Warri from Oghara with some friends when they ran into a gang of armed robbers.

Bayelsa United clinched the league title after playing 2-2 with Warri Wolves at the Oleh Township Stadium.
