Former Brazil and Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo has been sacked by Palmeiras on Saturday.

Assistant coach Jorginho will take temporary responsibility for the team in Sunday's Brazilian championship match against Santos, said the club.

"After a board meeting on Friday night, Vanderlei Luxemburgo is no longer trainer of the professional team," the Sao Paulo-based club told their website.

They added that Luxemburgo's sacking was not because of results on the pitch but over differences with the club's authorities.

Palmeiras were knocked out of the Libertadores Cup in the quarterfinals last week.
