One week after firing head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, Palmeiras beat on Sunday Avai 3-0 in the Brazilian soccer championship.
Obina was the highlight for Palmeiras, marking his end of a long slump and the return of his confidence as he scored twice.
Obina converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute before on target again in the 52nd minute as he slid to redirect a headed ball from Diego Souza, knocking it into the net.
The team's third goal came in the 74th minute. Cleiton Xavier took full advantage of a loose ball in front of the Avai net and blasted it into the home team's net.
Palmeiras was led by the assistant coach, Jorginho. The team waits the decision of former Sao Paulo head coach, Muricy Ramalho, as to weather he accepts the position as head coach or not.
With their loss, Avai fills the shoes of the former last place team, Botafogo. For Palmeiras, the signs of life are still present. Obina has now scored five goals in five games for Palmeiras in the championship.
Palmeiras snapped a three-game winless streak. With 16 points, the club now stands in fourth place, trailing first place Internacional who has 20 points, Atletico-MG who has 18 points and Vitoria who has 16 points but leads Palmeiras due to goals scored.
