FIFA Vice-President Jack Warner said in Abuja on Monday that he was expecting Nigeria to reach the semifinals of the Nigeria 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup based on their performance.

After a 3-3 opening draw with Germany, Nigeria beat Honduras 1-0 and Argentina 2-1 to top Group A and advance to the round of 16. The hosts are to meet New Zealand on Thursday for a spot in the quarterfinals at the Abuja National Stadium.

"In spite of their bad start, they have improved a lot and have shown they have a lot of potential, especially when you can see that they topped their group ahead of good teams like Argentina and Germany," Warner told reporters

"The team has been doing well, better than the way it started, and your team has the pedigree of coming from a nation which has won the competition three times before.

"I will reconsider coming back here if Nigeria does not reach the last four," he added.
