Taking a step back in order to appease the Corintians administration, head coach Mano Menezes declared on Friday that he spoke too soon in regard to Roberto Carlos's transfer.

Earlier in the week, the head coach announced that he had reached a verbal agreement with the midfielder that would bring him back to Brazil and to play for Corinthians in 2010.

However, the news did not make the team's director of soccer, Mario Gobbi, very happy. After hearing Menezes' statement about a verbal agreement, Gobbi went out of his way to say that any verbal deal was simply does not exist.

Hoping to avoid any sort of confrontation with Gobbi and the Corinthians head office, Menezes joked about the incident and took back his words.

"I was wrong when I used the words 'verbal commitment'. I forgot that when you are dealing with Roberto Carlos, every little detail is a big deal. Since we had a pretty monotonous week, I figured I would spice it up and get some attention in the newspaper,' said a playful Menezes.

Regardless of the worries of Gobbi and the early announcement of Menezes, the truth of the matter is that negotiations between Roberto Carlos and the Corinthians soccer team are in an advanced stage. However, it is known that Corinthians is offering the star midfielder a smaller salary than what Santos is willing to pay.

The advantages that Corinthians has is that they are already guaranteed to play in the 2010 Libertadores Cup. Additionally, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldo are great friends who happen to share the same agent, Fabiano Farah.

Roberto Carlos is quite interested in playing for Corinthians in their centennial year. The only matter remaining is to work out the player's payment.

According to Menezes, Roberto Carlos is financially stable and is not necessarily worried about his paycheck, but about winning and having fun doing it.

Corinthians is expected to make an official announcement regarding Roberto Carlos' signing in the next couple of days.
