Harambee Stars beat Ethiopia 2-0 to qualify for the Orange Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup on Saturday, and will meet Uganda Cranes, the defending champions, who finished first despite a barren draw with Zanzibar in Mumias.
Kenya finished second in group A with six points behind Zambia who lead by nine points and will meet Zanzibar. Both matches will be on Monday.
Harambee Stars scored through John Baraza in the first minute of the match from a header. Allan Wanga, a striker with Petro Atletico of Angola, scored the second in 70th minute. Deep in the injury time, Harambee Stars midfielder James Situma picked his second yellow card to see the host finish the match with ten men.
What was expected to be a walk through the park for Uganda in their final group "C" tie against Zanzibar turned out to be cracker with the Islanders refusing to thrown in the towel. The draw was enough for Zanzibar to remain in the tournament as they edged out Ethiopia with a superior goal difference.
Uganda had to settle for a 0-0 draw, but managed to top the group on seven points, with Tanzania finishing second on six points. Zanzibar have four, while Burundi head back home to Bujumbura pointless.
Seleiman Kassim thought he has profited with a close-range volley a minute from time, only for Godfrey Wahab to deny him. Uganda's head coach, Bobby Williamson might grumble, although Zanzibar was just about worthy of a point.
"We enjoyed our match and we now look forward to our quarterfinal match. We don't fear any team and after this point, we need to play three more matches to lift the title," noted Williamson.
Other quarterfinal matches will be on Tuesday between Tanzania and Eritrea while Rwanda will meet Zimbabwe with all matches at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The tournament ends on Sunday.
