Argentine club River Plate select new president

Argentine former soccer player Daniel Passarella was named new president Wednesday of the Argentine club River Plate, where he also played and worked as coach.

Passarella won on Saturday the elections of the club, just by six votes advantage over businessman Rodolfo D'Onofrio.

"The club needs me, but I can't be alone. I want the 17 million of fans we have in Argentina to help me. For River to be a family again," Passarella said during the office taking ceremony in River Plate's facilities in Buenos Aires.

Passarella, 56, thanked the partners who voted for the change and he added that he will try to fulfill everything he promised during his campaign.

"We have a great responsibility and we do not want to let you down," Passarella said.

Passarella won his club elections with 5,298 votes against the 5,292 votes for D'Onofrio.

Passarella took office despite D'Onofrio attempted to stop it with a judicial order for irregularities during the elections, however the judge neglected the request.
