Marcelo Guimaraes Filho, the president of the Bahia soccer club, announced on Sunday that Renato Gaucho will be the team's head coach in 2010 to replace Paulo Bonamigo.
The news came as a surprise as Rene Simoes was expected to be listed as the team's new head coach. Simoes is currently the head coach of the Costa Rican national soccer team that is headed to the 2010 World Cup.
"Renato is great coach, victorious player and has the spirit of a winner, just like Bahia. I am sure that our fans will welcome him and support him in 2010. Some details remain to be solved, but they will be worked out. Renato's desire to win is what led to our decision to hire him for the 2010 season," said the club president.
The 47-year-old has already coached for Fluminense (on four separate occasions), Vasco da Gama and Madureira. As a player, Gaucho wore the jerseys of Gremio, Flamengo, Botafogo, Cruzeiro, Fluminense, Atletico-MG, Bangu and the Italian team of Roma.
