Olympic champion Ma Lin kept his prestige in the men's singles by entering the semifinals of the ITTF Pro Tour English Table Tennis here on Saturday but failed to take a berth in the doubles final with new partner Xu Xin.

Ma, 29, encountered strong challenges from Japanese Kaii Yoshida but found the way to depress the former Chinese to end the seventh game in 11-3. Then, the veteran cruised into the semifinals after overplaying Chuang Chih-Yuan from Chinese Taipei 11-9, 8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7.

Later, Ma and his younger partner Xu Xin were held off by Japanese pair Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani in the doubles semifinals. Ma's opponent on Sunday will also be Seiya Kishikawa as the 22-year-old Japanese defeated No. 6 seed Chen Qi of China and No.2 seed Timo Boll from Germany consecutively.

Liu Guoliang, head coach of the Chinese men's team thought that Kishikawa was really in good form, but Ma also performed well on Saturday.

"Ma suffered a tough match when against Youshida, because both players are in the penhold style. Therefore, it's a little bit uncomfortable while playing," Liu explained. "And he kept strong in the double. The pair lost just because Xu couldn't deal well with the receptions. After all, that's the first time Ma and Xu pairing up."

Seiya Kishikawa and Jun Mizutani are going to challenge Chinese Wang Liqin and Ma Long in Sunday's final. Although Wang suffered a first round exit in the men's singles as the defending champion, the 31-year-old veteran managed to beat Gao Ning/Yang Zi from Singapore and French Emmanuel Lebesson/Adrien Mattenet in convincing results.

The top seed Ma Long is going to fight for a berth in the men's singles final against teammate Xu Xin.

South Korean veteran Kim Kyung Ah shocked the field in arousing shape as the 32-year-old not only overplayed Chinese hopeful Ding Ning in the women's singles quarterfinals, but also earned a place in the doubles final with partner Park Mi Young.

Kim and Park are going to meet Chinese pair Chang Chenchen and Guo Yan on Sunday. Kim and 27-year-old Guo will also confront each other in one of the singles semifinals.

Top seed Liu Shiwen, 18, will play Feng Tianwei from Singapore the other single semifinal.
