China's Du Jing and Yu Yang, women's double Olympic Champion in badminton, cruised to the second round of the Hong Kong Open within 19 minutes on Tuesday.
Du and Yu, the third seed of the event, beat Fu Mingtian and Zhang Beiwen from Singapore in 19 minutes with 21-8, 21-6.
Two-time world champion Nova Widianto/Liliyana Natsir from Indonesia continued to perform well after winning the mixed double event in the French Open early this month, defeating China's Chen Zhiben/Zhao Yunlei with 21-17, 21-12.
The first round of the competition in mixed doubles and women's doubles events saw no seeds beaten, whereas second-seeded Zheng Bo/Ma Jin from China pulled out of the mixed doubles event before the competition kicked off.
Zheng/Ma were among China's three pairs of doubles who had given up the Hong Kong Open. World Champion Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng, China's favorite in men's doubles and Guo Zhendong/Xu Chen, which were both scheduled to compete in men's doubles first round on Wednesday, would not show up in court.
China's top athlete in men's singles player Lin Dan, nick-named "Super Dan", had already withdrawn last Sunday due to tiredness and gone back to Beijing to prepare for the China Open in Shanghai later this month and the East Asian Games in December.
Besides, Wang Chen of Hong Kong, China, the reigning champion of the women's single, had chosen to rest for the whole week because of back and waist injuries.
The Hong Kong Open, staged here on Nov. 9-15, were the 11th tournament out of 12 of the World Badminton Federation Super Series.
