The last part of the race was a close contest between the then leaders Australia and Great Britain. The British rowers overtook the Aussies in the last meters and their boat hit the finish line with a result of 6 minutes and 6.57 seconds, followed by runners-up the Australian boat with a result of 6:07.85 and the French crew with a result of 6:09.31.
Great Britain, where the sport of rowing originated, has won a total of 22 Olympic gold medals in rowing before the Beijing Olympics, including six in the event of men's four.
