Editorial on historic mission of PLA in new era of new century |

The 80th birthday of The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) falls on Wednesday, or August 1. The People's Daily, the leading newspaper in China, issues an editorial titled "Taking on Historical Mission in the New Era of the New Century" to mark the occasion. Its detailed accounts are as follows:
The Chinese People Liberation Army has ushered in its 80th founding anniversary. We extend our warmest and heartfelt greetings to the commanders and fighters of the PLA, officers and men of the armed police, reserve units' servicemen and people's militia.
Fire shot of the August 1 Nanchang Uprising 80 years ago proclaimed the founding of a new-type people's army in Chinese history. It is truly the people's own army led by the Communist Party of China (CPC), which forges the fish-water relationship to the people, so closely related to each other as flesh and blood.
For the past eight decades, the PLA has faithfully carried out the sacred mission entrusted by the CPC and the people: Either in war years or at times of peace, either in their defense of national frontiers, or battles against floods and for relief effort, it has made historical contributions to the glory of the Party, the People and the motherland. The PLA is an army under the CPC's absolute leadership and a "great wall of steel" in defense of the socialist motherland and an important force in building socialism.
After the eight decades of arduous struggle, the PLA has grown both in size and strength, and become increasingly more revolutionized, modernized and regularized, continuously increasing its capability of fulfilling its mission; it has opened up a path of building the people's army in conformity to China's specific reality, created a whole set of the army building and managing principles, strategies and tactics, and trained a contingent of highly-competent military personnel.
Moreover, the PLA, through eight decades of unremitting practice, has nurtured and forged the fine traditions of submitting itself to the command of the Party, utter service to the people and courageous fighting, which give expression in a concentrated way to the character, the sole purpose and the distinct quality of the people's army. Meanwhile, through the eight decades of arduous explorations, the CPC has brought forth three major theoretical achievements in guiding military operations and leading army building, namely, Mao Zedong military thinking, Deng Xiaoping theory on army building in the new era, and Jiang Zemin's concepts on national defense and army building. They represent a scientific guidance that has to be adhered to in the construction of a modern, regular revolutionary army in the course of new practices.
