Editorial on historic mission of PLA in new era of new century (2) |

Millions upon millions of heroes and models come to the fore in PLA over the past eight decades, who have shed bloods or laid down their lives under heavy fire in battles of war, made exploits or innovations in their work, worked selflessly for contributions in their whole-hearted service to the people, and exerted painstaking efforts, and scaled new heights in the national defense and army building. In so doing, they add glory to the Chinese nation with their wisdom, blood and even precious lives. Representatives attending the current Conference of Heroes and Models across the army are the advanced, fine examples of such servicemen to carry forward the fine traditions of the PLA and plunge themselves in national defense and modernizing the army building in the new historical period.
At present, China's development is at a critical, new historic starting point, and so is the development of the PLA. National defense and the army building are confronted with new situations, new tasks and new requirements. Faced with such rare, unprecedented opportunities and challenges, the PLA shoulders the new mission for the new era of the new century: That is to guarantee to serve as an important force for solidifying the Party's status as a party in leadership, to provide a staunch security gurantee for safeguarding a vital strategic opportunity for national development, to provide a powerful, strategic prop for safeguarding the national interests, and to give scope to a major role of defending the world peace and promoting common development.
To fulfill its historic mission in the new era of the new century, it is imperative for the PLA to prioritize its ideological and political building, adhere to the guiding position of Marxism, equip or imbue the whole army with the Party's new, innovative research findings, to educate both men and officers in keeping to the absolute leadership of the Party, and to ensure the correct orientation for the building of the people's army.
The heroic PLA is sure to perform new meritorious feats and win new, greater victories in the course of defending the interests of CPC and the Chinese people, safeguarding and building up the motherland, and defending world peace under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee with Hu Jintao as the general secretary.
