An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale jolted some areas in southwestern Sichuan province, and nearby regions on May 12, 2008. On the occasion of one-year anniversary of May 12th Wenchuan quake, people across China wholeheartedly praise great achievements their nation has made in the anti-quake combat in the past year as well as the staunch, wise leadership and scientific guidance by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council in letters they addressed to the State Bureau for Letters and Calls based in the national capital Beijing.
They vowed in these letters to carry on the great "earthquake rescue and relief spirit" displayed by local Communists and ordinary, model residents and to work even harder and more assiduously for the rebuilding of their homeland.
In the face of disasters, the Communist Party has put up a solid, unbreakable "fortress", noted Li Bigui from Huangping county in southwestern Yunnan province.
In disregard of his own safety, Party General Secretary Hu Jintao visited the quake-hit area in Sichuan province right after the quake. During his trips of inspection, he extended his salute to local officials and villagers, called on soldiers, armed police and paramilitary forces at the frontlines as well as medical personnel. He ordered utmost efforts for Sichuan quake victims.
Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao rushed to the quake-hit areas the first time, where he made nine rounds of the cities and villages around the epicenter in the first 72 hours following the quake. He also called a host of State Council executive meetings at the critical juncture for the direction of quake-rescue and relief operations.
Both Wen Zhiguang, an old man in his 90s from He'shan city in southern Guangdong province, and Chen Xiuping from the prestigious Tianjin University of Technology in north China recalled that the successive visits by CPC General Secretary Hu and eight other Standing Committee members of the CPC Central Committee to the quake-hit areas was indeed a"relay race of love" to save lives.
As a prompt, quick response to the call of the Party Central Committee, the post-disaster reconstruction unfolded, the displacement of victimized people was organized in an orderly way and the work to overhaul infrastructure facilities commenced, remarked Han Ming from Mianzhu city in Sichuan. Consequently, a shadow cast on the mind of people in the quake-affected area has faded away gradually and dropped into oblivion.
Right after the quake, a weathered Tibetan woman Party member for 48 years told those working in the State Bureau for Letters and Calls that although rows of their houses in their mountain village crumbled, lots of yaks were buried, and their wheat and qingko barley flattened, they persisted on moving forward to tide over the difficulty with the help of the CPC and state leaders. "So, we rekindled the hope to live on," she said.
Wang Aili from Mianzhu city in Sichuan, however, had this to say. The CPC provincial committee and provincial government and local Party and government departments at various levels has got united, led people in the quake relief and rescue bid and won the substantial, periodical victories, and this has fully embodies the superiority of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
In his letter, Tong Yao from the Chuanbei-Qiang ethnical county acknowledged that after the abrupt death of 100 local officials in the quake, surviving officials held back tears and worked very hard to lead local residents to re-settle down and rebuild their homes.
Pupils from the August 1st Elementary School in Ningqiang county in neighboring Shaanxi province said that their uncles from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) installed air conditioners in their living quarters last winter to keep them from severe cold. Moreover, they said with a sense of pride that these PLA uncles have already built for them a brand-new school with a computer-equipped classroom, which they cited as the best in the vicinity.
Furthermore, multi-ethnical workers from an aluminum-producing factory in the Aba-Tibetan autonomous prefecture said their factory resumed production on December 12, 2008 thanks to the kind attention of General Secretary Hu Jintao and an all-out assistance from both PLA men and civilians nationwide and, after more than a month of modulation or trial test, it has gradually orbited its production into the right track.
