Sino-US relations has scored substantial, fruitful outcome and made noticeable progress ever since the two nations forged their diplomatic ties three full decades ago. This bilateral relationship not only benefits China and the U.S. and their people, and but helps to promote forcefully the world peace, stability and development.
As the Sino-US ties has become one of the most vital, important relations for either nation, and the significance far exceeds the scope of bilateral relations to evolve the common interests of the multinational and international arena.
This major change in Sino-US relations has two leading background factors.
First, under the conditions of in-depth development of economic globalization, some regional issues have been expanded and turned into global ones, and new, global issues have also cropped up continuously. So, the two nations have never shared so much closely interrelated, common interests as they do today, and these interests are reflected in the very wide-ranging global spheres. As a matter of fact, Sino-US interests are involved either in the global war on terror and the poverty reduction endeavor or in the policy response to the energy crisis and climate change challenges, which all cannot do without the participation and cooperation of the two big nations.
Second, along with its rapid (economic) development, historic changes have occurred in China's relationship with the rest of the world, the nation has beefed up its interrelation to the world at large, while it is competent to involve itself more in global affairs. Furthermore, in the wake of its rapid development and taking up more due responsibilities, Sino-US ties have shown more and more its global impact.
Amid great efforts of the international community to resolve global challenges over recent years, this type of "global relationship" between China and the U.S. has played an outstanding, active role with a much greater space and more opportunities for cooperation, and their mutual trust will constantly be enhanced in such cooperation. In the present new situation of escalating global financial crisis, to strengthen Sino-US cooperation would give scope to an irreplaceable role in pushing forward the world economy and promoting global economic recovery.
As the biggest developing nation and the biggest developed country, China and the U.S. assume their shared responsibility for the sacred cause of peace and development for humanity. The growth of Sino-US ties has been influencing peace and development in the Asia-Pacific region and in the world as a whole, which in turn aspire all the more for greater Sino-US cooperation.
As their national conditions vary, China and the U.S. have different approaches and corresponding prescriptions in coping with or handling global issues. Regarding the US notion on "responsible stakeholder", China is hoped mainly to play the role in line with the principled stances of the U.S., whereas China itself has adhered to or persevered in its own consistent and clear-cut positions on some global issues. Hence, both sides have to go through a period of seeking accommodation with each other.
Despite differences in their respective natural conditions, political systems and outlook on cultural values, the two nations'disparities and differing views are only secondary as compared to their shared interests and vital role in safeguarding the world peace, stability and development.
Looking to the future, the global significance of Sino-US cooperation lies in the very fact that it would create a new mode of cooperation between the developing nations and developed countries. Evidences have given an eloquent proof that a host of global issues cannot be effectively settled without cooperation between the developing nations and developed countries. Hence, Sino-US cooperation has a vital, exemplary role to play in the current world amid complex, in-depth and volatile changes.
In the face of varied global challenges of the 21st century, both China and the U.S. ought to fully play a constructive, cooperative and positive role, so as to contribute even more to the world peace and development.
