On August 13, Olympic Games Executive Director Gilbert Felli gave five "satisfactory" marks for the first third of the Beijing Olympics. He is full of praise for the opening ceremony, the Olympic Village, the competition venues, transportation, and the Olympic volunteers.
Felli said that the opening ceremony on August 8 was the most complex and massive opening he had ever seen. The whole ceremony was excellent, and it was managed exceptionally well. In addition, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was pleased to see many heads of state, governmental leaders, and members of royal families in attendance. At present, he has not yet received the exact figures on TV ratings of the opening ceremony, but from what he has heard on the radio, he is very pleased.
The Olympic Village is also excellent. Felli said that athletes from all countries are full of praise for the Olympic Village. They are very happy with the food and lodging, the transportation from the Olympic Village to competition venues, and the competition and training facilities.
In the past five days, there have already been many competitions. Felli is very satisfied with the advanced design of the competition venues, and is even happier with the amazing competitions within these venues. Not only are the competitions running smoothly, but the athletes are all performing exceptionally well.
"Chairman Rogge has already watched eight events, and he is very pleased with the cooperative efforts between us and the Beijing Organizing Committee," said Felli. "The Beijing Organizing Committee has provided high standard, high quality conditions and has done excellent work. We have received very positive feedback from the federation."
He especially noted the breakthroughs some countries have made at the Beijing Olympics. Boukpeti from Togo, an African country, won his country's first ever Olympic medal. In the Men's 10m Air Rifle competition, Indian sharpshooter Bindra won India's first ever Olympic gold medal in shooting with a score of 700.5. This was also India's first ever Olympic gold medal in an individual sport.
Felli was furthermore impressed by the Beijing Olympics transportation committee. He said that transportation during the Olympics has always been the most frustrating problem for organizers, and it is very difficult work because there are 41 competition venues holding international events, with a huge number of athletes, officials, and media personnel who must be shuttled between them. He also said that although the work of the transportation committee was very complicated, they did excellent work, accommodating an additional 3500 small cars and 1700 larger cars into the transportation system during the Olympics. "Their work has gone very smoothly, and I haven't heard any complaints about transportation at all."
The smiles of volunteers and security personnel left him with a deep impression. He said that although at times there may be miscommunication, the hard work and dedication of the volunteers along with the smiles of security personnel are all exceptional.
