Powerful tool
When asked whether the government is concerned about public opinion or forced to be, Liu Xiaoying, a professor at the Communications University of China, said it is natural that the government attach more and more attention to public opinions expressed on the Internet.
"To promote its governance capability, the government has to focus on the network of public voices, since it's more and more important nowadays. It's like two sides of a coin," Liu told the Global Times yesterday.
The Internet has emerged as a powerful tool in China for the public to speak out and help boost justice in controversial cases.
In a recent case, hotel waitress Deng Yujiao from Hubei Province stabbed two local officials and killed one after turning down what she said were "aggressive sexual advances," according to news reports.
Rage over the officials' alleged actions and sympathy for Deng flooded many news portals in China, and two officials were sacked in the ongoing investigation as the incident had a negative social effect.
