They all value the happiness they got from their effort. Liang Suhui, a PhD student of material science and engineering in Tsinghua University, is one of the few students who have kept working as volunteers six years since they enrolled in. She was a volunteer at Doha Asian Games. She did not think she had "sacrificed" much of her time because she always felt very happy through the course: happy with the friendship with many people, with progress on personal abilities, especially the ability of communication.

UN Volunteers Mahamat Adam (right), Cameroonian, Project Officer with China-Africa Business Council, and Beatrice Targa (middle), Italian, Intern for Support to Protection of the Rights of Children and Women, and "Beijing Top Ten Volunteers (2006)" winnner Liang Suhui, Chinese, Ph.D. Student of Material Science and Engineering Department, Tsinghua University, pose for a photo before the logo of People's Daily Online at the studio on Aug. 28, 2007.

But Liang was unhappy when there was misunderstanding. "When I tried to recruit volunteers in my school, someone even questioned me whether there was any business purpose," she said, puzzled.

Miss Targa, on the other hand, has to face the cultural gap, learning to cope with "a new world" where the language, the way of thinking and the team work are all different from hers. She believed it was necessary for the community to promote the voluntarism among the public to help young people know "life is not to make money as much as possible".

Mr. Adam, on his side, highlighted the scenarios where you've got to develop courage and intellectual power to carry on; where you've got to understand the pressure on the dignity of the receiving end and where the community may do not see enough justification of your efforts.

They all agreed it was not difficult to become a good volunteer. "Commitment, honesty, that's all", said Targa. She noted that people around would offer help with professional skills. And there was always something within your capability.
