Speaker: Rick Trainor, the Principal of King' s College London, President of Universities UK which represents the heads of all the UK's universities
College graduates are facing a difficult job market in the current financial crisis. How can higher education improve their competitiveness? Why cross-border free flow of ideas and talents are important? What does the globalization of education mean for China and the UK?
Mr. Trainor has been Principal and Professor of Social History at King's College London since 2004. An American by birth and undergraduate education, he took his doctorate at Oxford.
His published research has focused on 19th and 20th century British elites, especially in industrialised urban areas.
Mr. Trainor is a member of the Academy of the Social Sciences and an honorary fellow of Merton College Oxford and of Trinity College of Music.
Mr. Trainor has visited China several times during the past decade. More recently, he accompanied John Denham, the British Secretary of State for Innovation Universities and Skills at the Sino-UK Education Summit in Beijing in October 2007 and the UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, during his business visit to Beijing and Shanghai in January 2008.
Founded in 1829, King's College London is England's 4th oldest university institution, with almost 20,000 students, many of whom are postgraduates and/or from outside the UK. A member of the UK's Russell Group, King's has the 6th largest research income in England and a broad portfolio of business-related ventures.
