June 5 is World Environment Day. 33 outstanding college student volunteers from Tsinghua University, Minzu University of China, Capital Normal University, and University of International Relations carry out various publicity campaigns to promote environmental protection. They were selected and organized by the United Nations Volunteers, China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges (CICETE),Beijing Youth League (BYL),Beijing Volunteer Federation (BVF), and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and they work together to advocate for the idea of "everyone can be a volunteer in energy saving and environmental protection" .

These well-trained volunteers went to two schools for migrant workers’ children in Beijing, and held special class meeting on environmental protection in 20 classes. Let us hear their stories.

Fiammetta Mancini,
United Nations Volunteers international volunteer, and Partnerships Coordinator for "Strengthening Volunteerism for Development through the 2008 Beijing Olympics".

Fiammetta Mancini comes from Florence, Italy. She joined the UN Volunteers last January to work as Partnerships Coordinator for the UN-China Cooperation project “Strengthening Volunteerism for Development through the 2008 Beijing Olympics”. However, her passion for China started long ago, through a strong friendship with a Chinese schoolmate when she was 11. After having studied Chinese as a hobby during high school, she chose Chinese Studies as major and graduated with a Master from Venice University before moving to China in 2005 to pursue a specialization in advanced Chinese with a scholarship from the Chinese government.

Liu Xiwu
A postgraduate student in Tsinghua University majoring in micro-electronics, and will receive master’s degree in June, 2011.
Back to her college days, she showed great enthusiasm for public welfare. By participating in some causes of public good, she tried to encourage the public to join together so as to protect our environment. She deeply believes we can make a difference, and everything could be better.
