SCO to reach new consensus on deepening cooperation |

The Ninth Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is scheduled for June 15-16 in Yekaterinburg, Russian Federation. The SCO is a regional organization founded in 2001 in Shanghai, which includes China, Russia and the central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Meanwhile, another noteworthy event to be held in Yekaterinburg, the first meeting of BRIC (Britain-Russia-India-China) leaders, is due for June 16, and it would cover a wide range of issues including, among others, the world situation, a global financial system, the financial crisis, energy cooperation and environmental protection.
In an interview with People’s Daily overseas resident reporters Ma Jian and Zhang Xiaodong, SCO Secretary General Bolat Nurgaliyev said the current Summit meeting would beef up cooperation of SCO member nations in the political, security and economic sectors and humanity field.
The Council of Heads of SCO Member States would meet to discuss the development of the SCO and made relevant decisions, Nurgaliyev noted. First of all, the council will coordinate stances on cooperation in the security sphere and on the urgent issues concerning the regional and global development, and heads of SCO member states will also confer on global financial crisis and shared principled stands on how to cope with the crisis. As a positive factor in international and regional politics, Nurgaliyev said, SCO will create sound conditions to ensure the sustained economic growth of its member nations.
Moreover, he acknowledged, heads of SCO member states would discuss concrete ways or avenues of joint activity within the framework of SCO in dealing with the present world economic and financial situation.
In safeguarding the regional security and combating terrorism, Nurgaliyev said, SCO has adopted long-term programmatic documents and taken a range of measures against terrorism, splittism, extremism, drug trafficking and the transnational organized crime. Hence, good and effective cooperation among the departments concerned of the SCO countries have greatly improved the security situation in the region, he said.
Noting that the current SCO summit will assess the present international and regional situations, map out the internal development strategies and external engagement, Nurgaliyev said that the summit is expected to sign the Yekaterinburg Declaration, which would include a unanimous appraisal based on consultations of SCO member states concerning global and regional issues that call for urgent solution and the priority orientation of the multi-faceted cooperation among SCO members in all fields.
Regarding cooperation among the member states, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has coordinated actions through bilateral and multilateral cooperation modes within its framework, and the 2009 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum of the SCO held on June 5 was very fruitful.
Since the Regulation on the Status of Dialogue Partner of the SCO was adopted in 2008, many countries and international bodies have voiced the hope to acquire the status of dialogue partners, Nurgaliyev said. In this regard, he added, the Yekaterinburg summit shall further promote the SCO’s external contacts or engagement.
