The number of foreign students learning English in Australia increased by 21 percent last year, according to figures released on Wednesday.
English Australia, a body for Australia's English colleges for overseas students, said in a statement that a total of 121,858 foreign students were enrolled last year.
Asian students accounted for three-quarters of the number, European students 15 percent, central and South America eight percent .
The students enrolled in the colleges contributed 1.2 billion dollars (1 billion U.S. dollars) to the Australian economy last year, English Australia said.
"It is excellent news that Australia continues to attract increasing numbers of international students for language study," English Australia's chairman Seamus Fagan said in the statement.
