Nearly eight out of 10 Japanese elementary school students use personal computers and over 30 percent are using mobile phones, a Cabinet office survey said Saturday. The survey found that 77.4 percent of elementary school children use personal computers. Among junior high school students the figure rose to 81.2 percent while among high school students it came to 88.6 percent.
As to cellphones, 31.3 percent of elementary school children are users, compared with 57.6 percent for junior high school students and 96 percent for high school students. According to Kyodo News, most parents are concerned about children's surfing habits for fear of their access to websites offering violent, sexual and antisocial contents. A panel of government officials will hold a meeting Tuesday to devise measures to protect children from harmful information on the Internet. Stricter regulations on control of harmful websites are expected by the end of the year, Kyodo said. The nationwide survey, conducted in March, covered 5,000 people aged 10 to 29, including 2,000 children aged 10 to 17 and their parents.
