Nintendo president: Wii could outsell PS2

Sales of the Wii video game console could exceed the legendary PlayStation 2, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata claimed on Thursday.

The Wii is currently outpacing both Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 in most major territories and is likely to gain the largest installed user base of any home console worldwide within the next six months.

"Sony's PS2 sales of 100 million units is an extraordinary number that our home game console business has not achieved," Iwata said in an interview with Reuters.

"But if we can make our bid to expand the gaming population a continued success, we could exceed that," he said.

Sony has shipped more than 120 million units of the PS2, helping the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment conglomerate dominate the 30 billion U.S. dollars global video game industry over the past decade.

Iwata was also dismissive of the possible impact of Sony's 100-dollar price cut for the PlayStation 3 in the U.S. or the new slimline version of the PSP.

"I wouldn't say there is no overlap between the group of customers Sony is targeting and the group of users that Nintendo is targeting. But that overlap is quite small," he commented.

Last month, Nintendo Co. Ltd. sped past Sony Corp. in market capitalization to become one of the 10 most valuable companies in Japan.
