Global warming makes Los Angeles hotter in summer, pushing the city's average temperature 3.2 degrees Celsius higher than 2006's average, according to a report released on Tuesday.

The continued effects of global warming will mean more increases in the future, warned the report by Environment California.

After examining figures from the National Data Climatic Data Center, researchers found that the summer of 2006 and the year 2006 overall were the second-warmest on record for the lower 48 states in the nation, according to the report.

The report said the year 2007 is on track to become the second-warmest year on record.

"Throw out the record books, because global warming is raising temperatures in California and across the country," said Environment California field organizer Parjanya Rijal.

"The long-term forecast is for more of the same unless we quickly and significantly reduce global warming pollution from power plants and passenger vehicles," added Rijal.

Above-average temperatures in 2006 are part of a broader national warming trend that began in 2000, said the report, which was seen as an effort to back legislation combating global warming.

The group noted that several bills are pending in California's legislature on issues ranging from alternative-fuels funding to energy-efficient lighting requirements and renewable electricity standards.

Environment California officials said the congress is set to review global-warming legislation this fall, including the Safe Climate Act in the House and the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act in the Senate.

Environment California is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization.
