New alternatives---recycling waste water "So we look at new alternatives because water is really a renewable resource. By recycling we shortened the water cycle. We closed the water loop. That is how we achieved the sustainable water usage. We have achieved recycling of water for 50 percent. We can use every drop of water over and over again. So recycling is a very sustainable solution. So we use technology and produce very high quality water. "said Mr. Khoo proudly.
Mr. Kyoo said they did a lot of research projects. To try all means in small scale and when succeeded, they try it in large scale. Those who have new ideas will be given more bonus and those who succeeded will win great prize.
Today they have four NEWater plants supplying 12% of Singapore's water use and within five years, they will supply 30%. He said that Singapore also uses technology to desalinate sea water. So even if there is no water coming from Malaysia for some reason, they can still sustain.
Combination of political will, technology and public awareness
How to ensure a sustainable supply of water in Singapore? Mr. Kyoo said it is very important to have correct policies and good leadership, otherwise the policies won't be consistent or last long and technology can make it possible in reality while the people understands the importance of this matter.
"I think water issues are critical and strategic. But the problems can be solved if you have the right combination of political will, good technical people and the people who can understand the importance of solving the problem. If there is no water, there is no city, it ought to be solved. Water is everywhere, but it depends on how well the city can harness the water in a way that is sustainable" said Mr.Kyoo.
He said Singapore's experiences show that the cleaning up of rivers has promoted development and economic growth. Water sector now has become one of the three pillar industries in Singapore.
"My point is that the solution is depending on local government, it is not a trade off, it can be done. We want our water is clean, attractive and beautiful water. Not just enough water, but ensure that water is attached to people. Water for all, conserve, value and enjoy. That's our slogan."
