India is building a light water reactor (LWR) for submarines, the Press Trust of India (PTI) Saturday quoted one of the South Asian nation's top nuclear scientists as saying.
"Indian scientists and technologists are capable of making light water reactors and we are already constructing an LWR at Kalpakkam in south India for submarine," said P K Iyengar, former chairman of India's Atomic Energy Commission.
He was speaking in a public debate in Mumbai on New Delhi's nuclear deal with the United States, PTI reported
India expects to import LWRs in large number as part of the nuclear accord with the United States, but New Delhi needs not depend on Washington for light water reactor technology.
LWR is a thermal nuclear reactor that uses ordinary water, also called light water, as its neutron moderator.
