Singapore announced Wednesday a 12-million Singapore dollar (about 8 million U.S. dollar) initiative, aiming to encourage development and use of maritime information communication technologies.
By early 2008, all ships within 15 km of Singapore's shorelines will have access to low-cost and secure communication channels via a project named Wireless-broadband-access for SeaPort (WISEPORT), which allows real-time and data-intensive communications between ships and partners.
"When the system is in place...Singapore will be the first port in the world to offer wireless broadband connectivity throughout its waters," said Transport Minister Raymond Lim, who announced the project at an industry conference.
He added that this project will increase the efficiency of port activities.
WISEPORT is the first project under the initiative named Infocomm @ SeaPort Program between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
Over three years, the programmer will co-fund six infocomm projects that aim to enhance the port community's communication, efficiency and capacity.
The minister said the newly-launched program is timely, noting that "Technology is critically important to the maritime industry.. .Technology can give a valuable competitive edge to the company that invests in it well."
