Veterinarian experts of the European Union (EU) backed a plan on Wednesday to partially lift restrictions on Britain for foot-and-mouth disease if there is no new outbreak.
The EU's Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health agreed to ease the restrictions on Britain from Oct. 12, the European Commission said, adding a final decision will be adopted only if there are no further outbreaks outside a 200 km area around the surveillance zone and under strict conditions.
Under the endorsed proposal, the whole of Great Britain would remain a high-risk area with regard to the movement restrictions for susceptible animals and untreated products.
However, the export of fresh beef and sheep meat would be allowed to resume from the parts of Great Britain which fall outside the 200 km zone, subject to strict animal health conditions.
The allowance for certain parts of Great Britain to export fresh meat will be automatically suspended if a foot-and-mouth disease outbreak occurs anywhere beyond the 200 km zone.
