China's students in vocational institutions should get more opportunities to practice, said Karl Heinz Hopfensperger, a German vocational education expert, in a recent interview with People's Daily Online.
Karl Heinz Hopfensperger is a German vocational education expert who has worked in vocational education for nearly 40 years. Dispatched by the German government, Mr. Hopfensperger came to China in January 1991 as a vocational education expert of GTZ, a service business engaged in development and cooperation around the world.
He said the critical problem in China’s universities and vocational education institutions is that students do not get enough opportunities to practice what they have learned in school. In addition, they do not know how to work in a factory when they graduate, which leads to another problem: being laid-off after graduation.
When talking about the solution to this problem, Mr. Hopfensperger said, "schools and enterprises should work together to provide more internships for undergraduates."
Nowadays, a few of China's enterprises do not like receiving interning students; they only look for proficient workers. He said the enterprises are afraid that it is risky to train the students, as some of them will leave the enterprises once they get enough practice. Nevertheless, the enterprises should provide students with enough opportunities for practice, because it is significant for the industrial development of a country.
