Apple Inc. on Monday introduced its latest iPhone version which will run on third-generation (3G) wireless networks and include GPS navigation capability.

At the company's Worldwide Developers' Conference in San Francisco, Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs said the new iPhone will start at 199 U.S. dollars for an 8GB model and 299 dollars for a 16GB model, about half the cost of its earlier versions.

The new phones will go on sale on July 11 in 22 countries and regions, expanding to 70 by the end of the year. It will support 3G wireless networks and have global-positioning technology built in.

"As we arrive at the iPhones first birthday, we're going to take it to the next level," said Jobs.

The new iPhones will also support Microsoft Corp.'s Exchange software, an addition that puts the iPhone in more direct competition with Research in Motion Ltd.'s BlackBerry and Palm Inc.'s Treo smart phones and is intended to appeal to the business market.

Apple also announced a new Web-based service called "MobileMe," which the company describes as "Exchange — for the rest of us," a consumer-friendly way for people to link their iPhones to their home and work computers.
