The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Dominican authorities Monday launched a regional seminar on nuclear security featuring discussions on the nuclear threat and risk management of radioactive sources.
The seminar, which is due to end Thursday, drew representatives from 14 countries of the Caribbean region.
Ramon Quinones, Dominican representative at the IAEA, said the seminar will offer participants an opportunity to exchange their experience and knowledge on the IAEA's security system and their role in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
The seminar will also cover the importance of nuclear security and international efforts to fight malicious nuclear acts.
Another issue on the agenda will be the international efforts to launch joint programs and border controls to combat the illegal transportation of radioactive materials and generator hardware of ionization radiation that can be used to produce nuclear weapons.
Quinones highlighted the importance of the Non Proliferation Treaty of Nuclear Weapons in promoting the peaceful use of atomic energy and nuclear technology for sustainable human development.
