Astronauts wrapped up nearly eight hours of spacewalk on Monday after successfully attaching Europe's Columbus Laboratory to the orbiting International Space Station.
"Columbus is officially docked to the space station, joining the world's voyage of exploration of the New World," NASA commentator Pat Ryan said.
Astronauts Rex Walheim and Stanley Love began the spacewalk, the first of the STS-122 mission, at 9:13 EST (1413 GMT). The spacewalking lasted 7 hours and 58 minutes, longer than its planned 6 hours and 30 minutes.
The astronauts' main task is to move the 10-ton Columbus into position on the starboard side of the space station's Harmony module using the outpost's robotic arm.
The first spacewalk was originally scheduled for Sunday and was postponed by one day because German astronaut Hans Schlegel got sick following last week's liftoff. He was replaced by Love. Source: Xinhua
