People in Southern California were alerted Sunday to be prepared for a pair of sonic booms as NASA announced that space shuttle Endeavour is expected to land in Edwards Air Force Base.
The space shuttle would break the sound barrier as it glides local airspace, and residents from Bakersfiled to the Mexican border might hear the twin booms, depending on meteorological conditions, before Endeavour touches down around 1:25 p.m. local time.
High winds at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, have forced NASA to land Endeavour in California this time. Loading the glider onto that special 747 for flight back to Florida will cost NASA about 100 million U.S. dollars.
