Google has quietly rolled out IMAP support for its Gmail service, media reports said Thursday.

Gmail users are beginning to see an IMAP option enabled by default in their online account settings, which will make the service more useful to those accessing e-mail remotely.

With IMAP a user can access his mail via the desktop client, read mail, make changes and have those changes mirrored by any other client accessing the account. If the user accesses his mail from multiple machines, IMAP allows them all to stay in sync.

The company also detailed how to configure IMAP settings in both GMail and on the clients, including Apple's iPhone.
