Dell has agreed to build server computers based on Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system, the companies announced Wednesday.
Michael Dell, founder and chief executive of Dell, and Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's CEO, announced the multiyear partnership together on stage at the Oracle OpenWorld conference in San Francisco.
"The relationship gives Dell broader reach into the global free software community with Solaris and OpenSolaris, and gives Sun access to channels and customers across the volume marketplace," said Schwartz.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Dell customers will now be able to order rack or blade server products with either the Solaris or OpenSolaris OS. If a Solaris-based Dell product has technical issues, customers will now be able to call Dell to receive support -- something that was rarely productive before the deal.
